As search engines become better at returning results based on the current geographical location of their users, companies will need to pay more attention to the quality of their own geo-presence. The three links below should help clarify what I mean:

Database marketing Charlotte NC (Google) -- Google now returns localized business results, with map thumbnail included, at the top of its search results. It's not enough to be on the first page of search results anymore, businesses who want to reach local customers now have to figure out how to become pin A on the mini-map.

Geo Microformat (microformats.org) -- One approach to consider when improving a company's geo-presence is to embed location information on the company's web site using emerging standards such as the Geo microformat. My company's location is embedded in the following snippet:

Marking Up Structured Data (Google) -- Google announced this week that it now recognizes and customizes the display of structured data. Companies that adopt recognized microformats quickly may be able to gain an advantage on their slower competitors.
