The best way to improve return on a marketing effort is to make sure you are targeting the correct customers or prospects.  An important piece of this is suppression.   There are plenty of list brokers who will have no problem selling or renting you a list of deceased individuals, prison addresses, bankruptcy records, etc.

Here are a few tips to saving money on suppression:

  1. Create a centralized data repository to collect unsubscribe data across an entire company.  Don't fall into the trap of just collecting and using opt outs for a specific department.
  2. Don't pay for a SDN list.  The U.S. Treasury provides the list for free.
  3. Determine how often you need an updated list.  Do you need an updated prison address file monthly or yearly?
  4. Shop around.  There are plenty of list brokers, make sure you get the most for your money.
