Future of Direct Mail Marketing

Based on recent studies profiled in eMarketer, 2008 would be the first year in decades in which spending and volume have decreased for direct mail; and moreover, 2009 is expected to see a decline of 8% in spending. A big part of the decline is due to the current tough economic conditions for the financial industry. However, this should not be a surprise to anyone, and in fact, is very much in line with the belief that analytics and customer knowledge should drive direct mail marketing. In the next few years:

  • Direct mail will become more targeted with Customer Intelligence
  • Mass marketing will get less and less important
  • Growth in Digital media with email and Search will spur further erosion in direct mail

Organizations are looking to decrease the $ spend and volume in direct mail by being targeted and more relevant. The article also touches on newer tactics in direct mail where marketers are shifting to lower-volume, more targeted and higher-value campaigns and mass marketing is becoming more irrelevant.

Direct mail marketing is still a highly relevant medium and will continue to evolve and be a viable medium for marketing.  Click here to read the full article.

Your blog is very interesting. Being a newbie in this business area I can learn a lot from your experience. I do realize that the marketing tools today have to be chosen very carefully since they all cost money and you actually have to come up with a cost/benefit analysis for each tool before making the right choice. It is very time consuming but necessary and the big question is will a client pay for this? My answer will be a NO since we right now have a financial turmoil as never seen before, so funds are very short. A DM campaign takes a lot of research and planning, and most importantly a definition of the target group again a very tough exercise.
